The Preston Innovations DELCAC team have just had a great couple of weekends fishing against some of the best teams in the South of England and coming out on top due in part to the versatility and attractiveness, to fish, of the Supercrush and fin perfect groundbait ranges.

The competition was the Southern Superleague consisting of three rounds of matches with the mighty Daiwa Dorking, Kamasan Sarlets, FMC Tubertini and us, Preston Innovations Delcac competing for the two places in the Superleague final.

The first round was held at the prolific Gold Valley complex and unsurprisingly Daiwa Dorking were red hot favourites to win on what is effectively their home venue.

Our team plan was to start on the method feeder with a view to moving on to the pellet waggler and pole later on in the match. Most of the team got off to a good start with early fish on the method feeder. We then, for the rest of the match, swapped between the pellet waggler, method feeder and the pole. Our groundbait mix for the method feeder consisted of Fin Perfect mix 1 and Supercrush Green with some brown sugar added just to stiffen the mix.

A superb result on the day saw us win the round finishing 1 point ahead of Dorking with Starlets in third and Tubertini in fourth place.

The following weekend saw the four teams move on to Weirwood Reservoir for the final 2 rounds fished back to back on the Saturday and Sunday. The venue is stuffed full of skimmers and bream averaging 1 - 4 lb in weight with lots of roach and perch to catch as well. The main method for catching these fish is the groundbait feeder fished about 50m from the bank.

Our plan was to use 13ft Preston Sentient feeder rods with 6lb Korum line and a large Preston feeder. Hook lengths 0f 0.13 powerline to a size 14 pr34 hook. Bait was mainly worms or 2 – 3 maggots.

Due to the mainly shallow nature of the venue and the fact that a lot of the bites would come soon after the feeder had settled on the bottom we needed a groundbait mix that the fish would like and one that would empty quickly from the feeder. Our mix was Exploding Fishmeal Feeder and Fin perfect mix 2 mixed together in equal parts. This mix reacted perfectly as it emptied very quickly from the feeder and the fish seemed to find it irresistible. We felt this would give us an edge as we planned to re-cast every 2 or 3 minutes if not getting bites.

The weekend saw high winds and rain and the venue fished really well with lots of big weights.

Saturdays result saw Dorking win with us Delcac just one point behind in second place. Starlets and Tubertini in third and fourth place. This meant we were level with Dorking with the one round left to fish.

Sunday’s match ended with a great team performance for us winning the round and finishing 5 points clear of Dorking. We only dropped 6 points on the day across our ten man team so were obviously delighted with the result. So this meant we qualify for the final as Southern League winners.

We felt as a team that the Sonubaits groundbait mixes we used had definitely given us the edge over our star studded rivals during the course of this league.

Give these mixes a try if you fish venues similar to ours as they might give you the edge too.
