spacer Pre Baiting For Tench - Duncan Charman   29 APRIL 2009

The wedding season is now in full force and with my employee off work with a broken arm I’ve been extremely limited to the amount of time and been able to get off.

The two weeks starting April 4th and 11th saw very little to report apart from the odd bream, however over these two weeks l have been teaming up with Alan Stagg and baiting a low stock tench water that’s capable of producing a monstrous fish. I’ve also been looking at new waters as well as doing a lot of writing for one magazine and another.

Pre-baiting the tench lake every other day now for two weeks with Hemp & Hali crush laced with hemp, casters and dead maggots finally paid off and on the morning of my third overnight session the bobbin eventually started to dance resulting in probably the smallest tench in the water, a mere 5lbs 8oz. Catching the first tench from a new water is always pleasing and now that I’m off the mark, I’m hoping for one twice this size!

I’d promised to take my girlfriends father fishing for some time now and with Mill Farm Fishery opening it seemed the perfect place to take him. Mick had never seen a silver bream before so when he called me over later that day i nearly fell over as in his net was a silver weighing exactly 2lbs. My elastic kept stretching from numerous carp, tench, perch and roach but no silvers showed, however it was as we packed up that Mick’s tip pulled round once again and this time he slipped the net under a silver of 2lbs 3oz. What a result, probably the biggest ever brace of silver bream taken in a single season.

The Hemp & Hali crush laced with hemp, casters and dead maggots keeps going in the tench lake and I’m hoping of doing a day season sometime next week, although my throats on fire and l think the dreaded cold has got me.
