March started off a very cold month and I wondered if the bad weather was ever going to end! I booked a few days off around this time and with the end of the season in sight I decided to ignore the weather and have a concentrated effort. I had a burning desire to catch species I had rarely targeted before. Knowing my friend Duncan Charman would be having a dabble on his beloved Frensham Great pond I joined him with a target of catching a personal best Rudd.
Armed with Sonubaits hemp and a couple of pints of maggots the evenings and nights over the next week were spent in some of the harshest conditions of have fished in. The coldest evening reached minus 5, and standing in wader’s thigh deep in freezing water sometimes I thought I was mad. However, the rewards were worth the effort and regularly baiting with Sonubaits hemp kept the fish in the area and culminated in 6 fish weighing over 2lbs, including two personal best of 2lb 6oz and 2lb 9oz.
During the Rudd sessions I was invited to do some filming for Online Fishing TV. Teaming up with Duncan Charman we visited Bury Hill fisheries in pursuit of Zander. The session went better than we could ever of hoped and we landed sixteen fish between us. I even chipped in with a zander weighing 11lbs. Just short of a new PB. All my fish fell to small sections of sprats using the new Korum Precision rods.
The day after the session I received an invite to fish very special roach water that I jumped at the chance to fish. I can’t say much about the session apart from the person who invited me caught the biggest roach I have ever seen culminating in an absolute monster haul of fish. Well done to angler and thanks for the trip, you know who you are. A session I will never forget. Sitting in the swim next door I was happy just seeing these fish and was even more delighted when I had a bite culminated in a 2lb 7oz roach, my third PB during this month.
Before the season ended I had a couple of last session of my local River Loddon. Heading to a section of river I hoped to catch my first double from this stretch. Armed with a couple of tins of Sonubaits hemp and a bag of 6mm Sonubaits halibut pellets I was hopefully of some action. I had some new paste samples that Ian had kindly sent down I was keen to give these a try. I wrapped these around a 13mm Sonubaits halibut pellet and molding scalded 6mm pellets around the lead to the downfall of three barbel and several chub, included a double weighing 10lb 2oz. The paste is obviously going to be big a hit with the river anglers.
With my head firmly set on catching more roach I headed south of home to a day ticket fishery, which has been quietly making a name for itself. I had visited the venue a couple of times before about year ago so I knew what to expect. Armed with Sonubaits excellent tins of Hemp 'N' Corn and a couple of pints of maggots I hope more roach might follow. In four days session I totaled over a 150 roach, with 8 weighing over the magical 2lb barrier. The best weighing 2lb 6oz, only 1oz short of equally the PB I had set only a few days before. Again using the Korum Precision rods.
