Last week i travelled to a park lake I had earmarked for a floater fishing article that was coming up shortly, just to check it out and see how the place was looking as i hadn't been there for a while.

The Hard Fighting Scamp Common
Well, i'm glad I did as the lake had changed quite a bit. The usual beds of mini pads were in full swing by now and judging by the lack of fish everywhere I looked I guessed that the majority were already in their summer residence, in the beds of lilies in the lakes centre!! There was also a load of heavy dark blanket weed to contend with, so if I did hook one off the top then landing it on light floater gear could be a problem so plan B was put into action.
I had already baited a couple of likely margin areas earlier, and on checking them, I could see an large common approaching the 30lb mark and an equally sized mirror feeding hard on the bed of Fin Perfect 4mm carp feed pellets I had put in. I gently spooked them out of the way by dropping a few extra pellets over them and lowered the rig in as carefully as possible, sat back and awaited their return. And waited, and waited some more. Back up the tree, i couldn't see them so brought the rig out for inspection as i was sure i'd been done.
The rig was spot on so back it went but this time the hookbait was also wrapped in sonubaits halibut paste pellets, a few more pellets followed and back up the tree for a quick check. The fish came back in but i couldn't see them as the water was so coloured from their feeding.
Back down the tree just in time to grab the rod and play what felt like a rather powerful fish. Five minutes later and i'm staring down on a scamp of a common that had nipped in to take the bait from under the nose of one of the bigger two. i couldn't believe it, but the fight was great so its size was quickly forgotten.
I still had to find another water that could produce a fish or two off the top for next weeks article so on the recommendation of a friend I popped into Brentwood Angling that same afternoon to discuss their own Par Lakes fishery which is just down the road to them. Well, what can i say, i had a look round after getting permission and fell in love with the place. Theres 9 acres split between two well maintained lakes with comfy swims and loads of fish! I shot off back to the shop to buy a ticket as I found a few mooching around in the edge of the back lake and couldn't resist having a go. I tell you how I got on next time, till then tight lines.
