After packing my gear away at Bury Hill in what will probably be my last session of the year at this venue I started to ponder my next move. I knew Frensham would be receiving very little pressure and I wondered what the weed growth would be like. Arriving at home in the early afternoon I sorted out my Rudd gear and grabbed a couple of pints of maggots from my local tackle shop. Arriving at Frensham the first job was to riddle the maggots and replace the maize with Sonubaits Supercrush Green. This helps to cover the maggots in fishmeal, giving them an extra boost.
As the lake was fairly calm I decided to use the float and wade out chest high in water. I waited until dusk before starting to fish and regularly sprayed a mixture of maggots and Sonubaits hemp in a bid to attract a shoal of Rudd to feed. I managed three bites during a short evening session. The best a 2lb 7oz fish – my biggest caught on the float to date.
Over the next 10 days I decided to concentrate on Frensham. I was still yet to see any other anglers targeting Rudd and I knew if I kept the bait going in on a regular basis then it might turn up a good fish. I fished three short evening sessions in the week after work, which produced 9 Rudd and two tench. The best a 1lb 14oz Rudd and a tench weighing just short of 6lbs.
On Saturday I returned to the lake before dusk and using my Korum Precision Multi Feeder rods I decided to see how the bolt rigs would perform. I had found a small area clear of weed and after introducing Sonubaits hemp onto the area a few days before, fish had defiantly been clearing the weed. I caught fish from the off and my first four casts produced 2lb Rudd. By the end of the session I landed around 30 Rudd with eight fish weighing over 2lbs, the best a 2lb 6oz fish before returning home around midnight.
I carried on fishing for the Rudd for a couple more evenings before the ticket that I had been waiting for which offered big roach arrived.
