spacer Maggots Dead or alive - Flavouring   14 APRIL 2008
spacer spacer spacer

I have never been a great lover of fishing maggots, mainly due to keeping them in good order and dry on a cold wet winter’s day, a hot summers day or in fact any other day.

Much has been written on the use of dead maggots not only as feed but also as a hookbait I find they are even more effective when flavoured. Trying to flavour live maggots only makes them sticky, leading to them sweating and crawling all over the place however its simplicity itself once they're dead.

The best way that I have found to flavour maggots is by simply placing half a pint in a plastic freezer bag along with a good helping of your chosen flavouring. Blow the bag up, tie it and shake well before placing within the freezer.

Sonubaits Tutti-frutti is my current favourite,  I find the Sonu flavours are not as harsh as many of the very concentrated flavours available on the market and will happily put in 10- 20ml, which allows greater spread across the bait.

When you take the maggots out of the freezer whilst defrosting the flavour is drawn into the maggots flavouring them completely not just on the surface.

In use the dead maggots are far more user friendly not crawling off into the silt or weed making your bait much more visible.

Simple but very effective and it means you can keep bait stored in the freezer ready to nip out on a short session no longer are you at the mercy of the tackle shop being open.
