Without a doubt, Sonu Fin Perfect Feed pellets played a part in the most successful and lucrative week in my match fishing career. I won the 2010 Preston Innovations Festival at White Acres – and followed it up with first place and a cheque for £25,000 in the Park Dean Masters.
In the Park Dean Masters Final I drew peg 16 on Jenny’s Lake and I committed myself to fishing the long pole in an attempt to stealthily pick of carp without spooking them.
I didn’t want to fish the Method feeder as I believed you would have a quick start but then spook these wary fish out of the swim, whereas a quieter approach on the pole might help to put more in the net throughout the four hours duration of the contest.
That was the theory and I am glad to say it worked!
At the all-in I potted in some chopped worm and caster, then started flicking 6mm fishery feed pellets over the top, to draw in fish and bring them up in the water.
The peg was six feet deep and I opted to fish two feet deep, using a banded 6mm Sonu Fin Perfect feed pellet on the hook, alternating it with half a worm.
The ploy worked a treat and I managed to tip 18 carp onto the scales for just ounces shy of 100lb. The weight was enough to secure victory by almost 10lb from Preston Innovations and Sonu-sponsored colleague Lee Edwards.
It was a matter of being patient with the carp, which averaged 8lb apiece. With the water being shallow, they hurtled off when hooked, and it was a case of coaxing them quietly back to the net.
The pole I used was the brand-new Preston GIS 14, fitted with a 13H Hollo Preston elastic, with the new Preston Dacron connectors, to keep the rig line away from the pole tip.
The main line was Preston Powerline in 0.17mm to a 0.15mm hook-length of the same. The float was aPreston Durafloat 9, with a bulk of shot a foot down, effectively at half-depth. The hook was a Preston PR28.
It was fantastic to win such a prestigious final. The new pole was fantastic and the result was the right one for Sonu Baits and for Preston Innovations, my two sponsors.
