spacer Go Easy On The Feed For Bigger Nets Of Fish - Des Shipp   10 FEBRUARY 2010
spacer spacer spacer

I've just returned from a day fishing against Dorking and England team-mate Will Raison for a feature in monthly angling publication Advanced Pole Fishing - ands the feeding lessons learned, using Sonubaits 2mm and 4mm Fin Perfect Feed Pellets were more than worthwhile.

I used some Sonubaits Fin Perfect 2mm and 4mm feed pellets and caught a dozen skimmers and a bonus 9lb carp - foul-hooked in the pectoral fin - to win the contest with a weight of 27lb to Will's 7lb total.
And the name of the game was to feed next to nothing, although that was not the way that I started the day at Furnace Fishery in Sussex.
I initially fed four balls of groundbait - Sonubaits F1 groundbait and Sonubaits Supercrush Dark - on one line, and two on another, both at around 13 metres. I also elected to pot in a small amount of Fin Perfect 2mm feed pellets, plus some 4mm Fin Perfect pellets and some dead maggots, on a 14.5 metre line.
The all-in sounded and out went my rig, a Preston PB8 in a 4 x 14, with a Preston PR32 hook in a size 20 carrying my single red maggot offering.
Will started catching small roach and skimmers straight away but after 45 minutes I was biteless and worried.
I went out to my 14.5 metre line and thought I saw my float bristle dip slightly. I waited, it went again and this time I connected and the result was a 9lb carp, which tested the No5 Preston slip elastic, which I had run through the top three on my pole, to the limit.
I then caught a couple of decent skimmers from the 14.5 metre swim, but I was having to wait around 15 minutes between each bite.
I was thinking hard about what was, or more accurately, wasn't going on in my swim, and I got the impression that an odd fish was coming into the peg, having a go at the hookbait, and being caught, but it was a case of fishing for one bite at a time.
Will was feeding a small ball of groundbait occasionally, and by small, I mean about the size of a large marble.
I decided to get the 16 metre section of my pole out of the bag and plumb a new swim at 16 metres. I put in just a few micro feed pellets and 30 red maggots, and I then alternated between this new swim and my 14.5 metre swim, to end up with a dozen skimmers plus my rogue carp.
Every bite had to be worked for, and sometimes I was striking at just a tiny tremble on the float bristle.
It transpired that the day before the feature the lake had a thin coat of ice on it, and this had all melted overnight. The cold water would have sunk to the bottom, because cool water is denser than warmer water, and this had obviously knocked the fishes appetites.
But you still have to feed something occasionally, even if it is only a tiny amount of bait.
The day's events provided a useful angling lesson in feeding, and it is one I am happy to share with Sonu blog readers.
