spacer Addictive Fishing - Alan Stagg   23 NOVEMBER 2009

The weather was forecast to stay mild for the week and I thought a couple of evening trips carp fishing would make a welcome change.

After making the short drive I arrived at the venue I had fished a few times in the past.  I set up in a swim that commanded a lot of open water and blasted two rods with PVA bags full of Sonubaits 6mm pellets and a 13mm Halibut pellet as hook bait into the middle of the lake.

A fish showed soon after casting and I knew that if I could get a bait nearby there would be a good chance of a bite.  Ten minutes after recasting the bobbin pulled up tight and a fish was on.  Mid way through the fight the other rod signaled a bite and I thought I had wiped my remaining rod out.  Looking at the angles of both lines I was wrong and actually had another take!  On netting the first fish which turned out to be a common around 16lb I soon played in a lovely heavily scaled mirror weighing around 15lbs, which made a nice brace.

The next evening I returned and using the same tactics I landed two small commons and a nice fully scaled mirror on my short two hour session.

Next stop was Bury Hill fisheries in Dorking in search of more zander.  The weatherman had predicted more mild wet and windy conditions, which I hoped would keep the fish in an active mood.  Previous sessions had yielded some good fish and I hoped I could repeat the same.  I arrived at the fishery late morning and found the area that we had been catching from well and truly stitched up.  I settled for an area nearby and cast out two sprat offerings and sat back to await events.

Bury Hill lived up to its excellent reputation and over the course of the session I landed 6 zander.  One of around 5lbs, three upper 7’s, an 8lb 4oz and the highlight of the trip an immaculate specimen and a new personal best weighing 11lb 4oz ended a memorable trip.  My second double in ten days and what can only be described as highly addictive fishing.
