Moon lake, is usually dominated by the method feeder cast tight to the island. But on the day of the match I drew a peg you can’t get close enough with because of overhanging trees.
So I decided on all out pole approach. At 13 mtrs I got 7foot of water, so I assembled 2 rigs, 1 4 x 16 dura 8 with a spread bulk of no 8 stotz, starting about 15 inches from the hook and a heavier 1gram dura 8 in case the wind got up and it started to tow.
Moon lake, is a mixed fishery with lots of small bream 8oz- 1 ½ lb and carp up to about 20lbs. Most people fish big baits to avoid the bream but during the week we had had some colder nights so I decided to start to fish for them and hopefully get a few carp later in the day.
I started off cupping in 4 balls of F1 mix a sweet fishmeal groundbait at 13mtrs and kinder cupping 4mm Fin-perfect feed pellets over the top and fishing 6mm ton-up expander on a 16 PR 32 hook.
With-in 15 mins I was catching bream steadily, but nobody around was catching carp after a couple of hours I had probably got 20lbs of bream but only 1 small carp. On the other side of the lake they had started getting a few carp on the method feeder, so I had to take a chance and up the feed, I cupped in a couple more balls of F1 mix, took off my kinder cup and started loose feeding a couple of pouches of 6mm every 10 mins it worked a treat with-in ½ an hour I was catching carp steadily from 2lb-12lb.
Everytime it slowed I cupped in a ball of F1 mix to revive the peg. The carp were defiantly responding to the ground bait. In the last 2½ hours I had 70lb of carp and ended up 2nd in the match with 98 lb in total.
That was a satisfying result especially because I had done something different to everyone else and it had worked.
