A very sad week due to the loss of my best friend to cancer meant very little time for fishing, however knowing he would have wanted me to continue with my passion for angling l did manage to get out on a stormy Thursday night.

Heading for a local lake with very little history of eel captures l decided that it was worth casting out a couple of fish sections and if no eels showed at least have a good nights sleep.
As soon as darkness fell the indicator on the left hand rod fell to the ground but the take was dropped. This raised my confidence that an eel was indeed the culprit. After a few bleeps up until midnight the marginal rod indicated a twitch take and half expecting a perch but to my surprise a small eel around two-pound came to the net. Two hours later a run was missed before a repositioned bait signalled an identical response, however this time whatever was on the other end started pulling back. After an anxious few minutes l managed to bundle a good eel into the net that pulled the scales around to 4lbs 9oz.
What else does this unknown quantity of a lake hold, we will see!
