spacer Mixing it up - Kevin Durman   4 OCTOBER 2011
spacer spacer spacer

I do like to mix my Carping up a little, one week I can be found on a well stocked water and the next I will be lost somewhere in the wilds of a 160 acre pit with not a lot in.

My past couple of trips have been exactly as above.  I’ve had a weekend back on Mid Kent’s Stour lake, and a weekend on Westbere, my big pit.
On Stour I carried on where I left off a month or so back and continued to put a few Carp on the bank.  This lake has always been good to me, mainly due to the Carp very much liking my solid pva bag approach.  A bag filled with 2mm S Pellet has always got me a few bites.  The best on my most recent visit was this beautiful 29lb scaley mirror, look at the length of her, what a cracking fish.

Having had a bit of success and put a bend back in the rods at Stour for my next trip I decided to have another go on Westbere.  The challenge of trying to catch a carp out of a lake of this size is what keeps pulling me back.  I put out a tin of Hemp n Crushed Tigers over two rods with two rubber Tigers on the hair, one floating and one sinking.  Whole Tigers are banned on Mid Kents waters, but crushed are allowed so this is how I manage to feed and fish with a tiger as bait.  It’s such a wonderful place to be, catching is a bonus.  But catch is just what I managed to do, its always a shock on this lake when the buzzer bursts in to life, even more so on this occasion as I had forgot to turn it on!!  I heard the indicator smack in to the rod butt and the spool fizzing like a goodun.  After a bit of coaxing in and out of some pads I had a lovely common in the net.  Any carp is a real prize, so as you can imagine I was very pleased with this one of 27lb.
