If people ask me what I rate above all else in the Sonubaits groundbait range then my answer is simple: Hemp and Hali Crush.
I have total confidence in this groundbait when targeting big weights of chub and barbel on the River Wye and the River Severn.
Hemp and Hali Crush has a coarse texture and is quite sticky, due to all the hemp particles it contains, but for a typical five-hour match on the Wye, one of the two kilo bags is enough to see you through on the open ended feeder.
I'd expect to feed somewhere in the region of six pints of hemp and caster through the feeder in a match, and I know that if there are fish in front of me, they will come to this groundbait every time.
I've mentioned my preference for Hemp and Hali Crush to quite a few anglers who target the matches on the Wye - and they have more or less switched on to it.
If it is hard, like in winter, I will split the Hemp and Hali Crush mix 50-50 with Sonubaits P Mix. The P Mix is a lot finer and creates more of a cloud in the water, and I have found it has brought me good results.
When I target Wye barbel I use sensible gear and that means a reel loaded with a minimum of 8lb line such as Korum Reel Line.
The rod is either a Preston Dutch Master 13ft 8" or 14ft 2" model. The barbel in the Wye are solid simply muscle because of the powerful flow and they take some stopping, so you need to gear up accordingly, with rfish anywhere from 2lb to 10lb.
Hook-wise, I usually plump for a Korum S3 in a size 14, and I'll either hair rig an 8mm Sonubaits Pellet-O hard pellet, or put four or five red maggots on the hook.
