The fishing this last week has been somewhat challenging due to the poor weather conditions. Low temperatures have made the fish less obliging but they are still there to be caught for those willing to put in the effort.

Thursday saw me heading to a day ticket fishery in search of big roach again. With plummeting temperatures and heavy rain in the early hours made for a slow start. The big fish I had hoped for did not show but plenty of smaller fish made for an enjoyable day. I had planned to go back again Saturday but after plummeting temperatures and a heavy frost I had a rethink and decided to head to my local River Loddon for a few hours in hope of perch and pike. One small pike of around 5lb snaffled my live gudgeon on dusk. Once home I looked at the weather forecast for the following day and it didn’t look like much was going to improve.
I was back on the Loddon again Sunday morning after a heavy frost which saw many of the local lakes freeze over night. First cast using a live gudgeon was snaffled in minutes by a perch of around 1lb 8oz. Five pike followed the best a low double that made for an enjoyable days sport.
