I really enjoy fishing with pellets and the SonuBaits' Fin Perfect feed and expander pellets are, in my opinion, the best you can buy in the tackle shops.
The expanders, in particular, pump very well, don't lose their shape and have a consistency once pumped that means they stay on the hook well. And that is a major plus point, because many pellet 'newcomers' do find fishing with this bait a bit of a struggle initially.
Recently I fished the final round of the Preston Innovations-sponsored UK Championships at the Woodland View fishery complex in Droitwich.
Using Sonu's Super Scent scopex-flavoured sweetcorn, in conjunction with Woodland View's own fishery feed pellets, I managed to catch 71lb of carp to take second place in my section.
I caught some big carp down the edge, using double expander on the hook or double sweetcorn, and the carp went up to 10lb.
Down the side I was fishing in a depth of water between two-and-a-half to three feet. I set up my Preston Innovations GiS 12 Absolute pole with a Preston Pullakit, fitted with a 15H Hollo elastic. The rig comprised a Preston Durafloat 10 on 0.19mm Preston Powerline main line to a 0.17mm Preston Powerline hook-length, finished of with a size 14 Preston PR28 hook.
When fishing the margins it pays to be as patient as possible and to resist trying in the edge too soon. I think I was about halfway through the match before I finally decided to have a look in the margin, after seeing some signs of activity.
Another top tip for those unfamiliar with fishing close in, is to ensure the pole tip is fished 'bankside' rather than out over the fishes heads. Generally speaking, a hooked carp will always swim in the opposite direction to the pole, so this means they swim out into open water more often than not.
Going back to pellets for a moment, I am sometimes asked how I prepare expanders, and this is what I do. Please note that I prepare my expanders on the morning of the match at home, never the night before.
Step One - I fill the expander pump three-quarters full with water.
Step Two - I then put the required amount of expanders inside the pump.
Step Three - I then pump the pellets and release the valve to make them sink.
Step Four - Now I carefully drain off nearly all the water. The only water left is sufficient to just cover the pellets in the bottom of the pump.
Step Five - At this stage I will replace the pump lid and pump the pellets again - NOT releasing the valve.
Step Six - On arrival at my peg, I release the pellet pump valve, transfer the expanders to a bait tub and I am ready to fish with them.
Give the SonuBaits' Fin Perfect expander pellets a try - I'm sure you will find them to your satisfaction.
