When your on a roll its really difficult to pull away from a certain style of fishing and a certain venue, however like the bream at Westhampnett, once repeats start coming along it really is time to move to pastures new. A few weeks ago l caught the only bream in a ten-acre lake, which l used as a confidence builder as it was two years between capture but this week l dropped the same rig into the same swim that l caught a fifteen-pound barbel a couple of sessions ago and the same fish made the same mistake. It’s a fantastic looking fish, and albeit slightly down in weight at 14lb 15oz l felt that it was the ultimate sign to move on and leave well alone. This time it was a Sonubaits hard 13mm halibut pellet wrapped in paste that fooled this friendly specimen. I’m now off to Burnham-on-sea for a couple of nights, one of which will be spent lakeside in the hope of a big eel!
Tuesday night l spodded around four pints of dead maggot, cut up fish flavoured in Sonubaits Monster Crab into the Match Lake on the Caravan site at Burnham-on-sea. Immediately the area started bubbling and l rubbed my hands together as l imagined the eels going crazy below the muddy water. Unfortunately the eels turned out to be bream and in-between a constant run of these managed two small eels and a modest common. At 3am l couldn’t see it happening and headed to the van for some well-needed shuteye.
I noticed a couple weeks ago a big crucian coming from Cemex Frimley Pit 2 and thought that a change of scenery was needed. I once remember a few crucians showing themselves by rolling under my rods whilst tench fishing a few years ago on the venue so its seems the time is right to put the Marsh Farm tactics into operation.
The swim l saw those crucians rolling in was taken, however looking at a corner that l would normally ignore caught my eye as the wind was pushing into it and there was a lot of bubbling and activity. Most was from carp but a couple of splashy rolls
