spacer Freeze Your Sonu Baits Super Scent Corn For Cracking Results - Paul Coyle   15 DECEMBER 2008
spacer spacer spacer

I've built my commercial match fishing success on one main bait - sweetcorn, and I'm going to let you in on the deadliest secret of all. If you freeze then thaw your Sonu Baits Super Scent corn before your next match - you'll catch more fish in winter.

Corn changes in terms of texture and weight once it has been given the freeze-thaw treatment. It becomes softer, better to hook, and it also becomes lighter, meaning that it falls through the water much more slowly.

In deepest winter, when the colour has dropped out of commercial fisheries, I am a great believer that the carp watch everything that falls into the water.
If you pot in three pieces of corn, you can bet that any carp in the area will watch the corn as it falls to the bottom.

If I were to used corn straight from the tin and I fed two pieces in a cup, then nicked a hook into a piece and laid it in on my rig, the piece with the hook in it would definitely fall faster than the loosefed offerings. However, if I slip on a freeze-thawed piece, this falls more slowly because it is lighter, and will sometimes fool a wary fish.

Let's face it, on a cold day the fish aren't going mad competing, but if I can fool one or two extra fish with my special approach with the corn, that can swing the result my way.

All I do is drain the corn from the tin and rinse it with water that has collected in a water butt in the garden. I never used water from the tap to rinse corn because tap water contains chlorine, and the fish can sense it. Once I have rinsed the corn it goes into a plastic bag or a bait tub, and is then put in the freezer. The night before a match it is brought out of the freezer and next morning it is ready for use.

Give this idea a go and watch as you start catching extra fish!
