I rounded off this year's Preston Innovations-sponsored UK Championships with a decent match at Barston Lakes, where I finished second on the day with a 90lb-plus weight of carp, F1s and skimmers - and the bait that did a lot of the damage was Sonubaits' pre-drilled 8mm boilies, fished in conjunction with a Method feeder.
I drew peg 21 on the main lake and tackled up an open end cage feeder on a 10ft Preston Innovations Mini Carp rod, and a large inline Method feeder on a 12ft 6" Preston Excel feeder rod for a big cast.
I started on the shorter rod, using a 50/50 mix of Sonubaits' S Pellet groundbait and Sonu F1 groundbait, with either pieces of luncheon meat or Sonu pre-drilled 8mm White Chocolate boilies on a hair-rigged PR36 hook. I had around 15lb of fish on this rod, casting around 30 turns of the reel handle, but I could see that a lot more fish were showing further out.
I picked up the longer rod and used Sonubaits Match Method Mix around the feeder, with a beefier PR38 hook at the business end, using either yellow (Pineapple), red (Tutti Frutti) or white (White Chocolate) pre-drilled Sonubaits boilies on the hair rig.
The Method approach, casting 60 turns of the reel handle, brought me 11 carp, eight F1s and a few skimmers, to boost my weight up to a total of 42 kilos and second place on the day.
If you haven't used them before, why not try Sonubaits' pre-drilled boilies? They cost £3.99 per tub and because they are pre-drilled, they are easy to fix on to a Preston Quick Stop hair rig attachment.
They make fishing simpler and apart from that they catch you a few fish - what more could you ask for?
