PVA bags on the Hair - Duncan Charman
spacer

This little trick was noticed whilst working with Colin Davidson last winter. If there is anyone out there that can fool a clued up carp then this guy is up there with the best, and unbeknown to him every little trick he had up his sleeve was noted and placed in the back of my brain, ready to be used when the time seemed right.

Any lake that’s pressure has to be approached with total confidence when it comes to rigs and bait and Cemex Frimley is one such place. These carp have seen it all so concealing your end tackle is crucial if you want to get a result. Frimley’s carp are very visual so l knew that l needed a tactic where l could cast at showing fish. The answer was to make up tiny PVA bags of Sonubaits Stick Mix and thread these onto my hair before securing a small 14mm boilie. Making the bags are easy but if you make these bags really tight then you will be left with a very long hair. I love long hairs but on pressured water it’s always in the back of my mind that a fish can inspect a bait without getting pricked. So in order to keep the hair fairly short l made the bags up so l could compress them in the centre with my fingers allowing them to be placed on the hair followed by my hookbait but still managing to keep the hair quite short. Testing the presentation in the margins created a perfect concealed area around the small Korum S3 size 14 hook. I matched the lakes bottom with 10lb Gardner Sly Skin in camo brown, used a small running lead plus a short leadcore leader, which pinned everything down and certainly outwitted this clued up carp.

If you want to place moist items within a PVA bag like prawns, corn, fish pieces or even worms then the best way to do this is to give each offering a good dusting of dry groundbait. Not only does this dry the bait off allowing a few more seconds to cast out but also introduces loads of extra fish meal attractants around your bait. Its also worth dusting your hookbait as its this that normally will dissolve your bag as it hangs next to it. I like to use a fine groundbait, Sonubaits Supercrush Green is perfect for bait dusting.

This little edge all came about after the finding too much maize in with my maggots. Now when l buy maggots my bait box – bucket already has some Sonubaits Supercrush Green placed in it and l ask my local tackle dealer not to add any maize. When on the bank l already know that the dust on my maggots contain loads of fishmeal attractants and to increase the pulling power of my bait l quickly wet my maggot feeder once full, press it into dry Supercrush and cast out. This may sound a little over the top but drop the feeder in the margins and watch the tiny particles fall through the water.

Watching chub and barbel feeding can be extremely rewarding and this week I was lucky enough to find a swim that allowed just that. With chub going mad I dropped a barbel rig in between with a 13mm hard pellet on and was gob smacked at how they totally ignored it whilst taking every small pellet that drifted downstream. Eventually one did slip up but was lost after just pricking it. Changing the rig to a small link ledger and by banding two small pellets to the hook I was instantly in after just a couple of seconds. Another one followed but as these fish were only small around two-pounds so I took the rig downstream and extracted two good fish, including a five plusser. I also learnt just how fish in our rivers have switched on to pellets as after feeding maggots, hemp and pellets into a swim and catching nothing after an hour on maggot dropped again a link ledger with two small banded pellets and caught two chub straight away.

Main Page image Feeding Pellets & different sized Boilies at Range
spacer

Feeding pellets at range can be a problem for some as by their very nature most are small and light and may be slightly irregular in shape which will limit both distance and accuracy.

The first tip would be to NOT mix different sizes together. By all means feed different sized baits as this will keep the fish guessing and will result in more bites, but try and introduce each size, one at a time. You will notice that by mixing different size baits and then using a catapult you will end up with baits all over the place.

Continuing this theme, when spodding you will find that your accuracy and distance will increase if you load your chosen spod with just one size at a time. This allows  the weight to be evenly distributed within the spod  and therefore increases the spod’s stability in flight, giving greater range and improved accuracy.

The last tip with  spodding is to plug the end of the spod with a groundbait mix, before you cast it out to your chosen mark. This prevents any spillage and means less wasted bait and equally important, less wasted effort, as the whole content of each spod will reach your target.

The best mix I have found for this is a 50/50 blend of the Hemp and Hali Crush together with the Fishmeal Feeder. Mix it so that you have a fluffy texture that just binds and holds it’s shape when compressed. This will plug the spod perfectly whilst in flight but will quickly fall out once it has landed.
