Fishing for the first time on the Barbel Society's stretch of the tidal River Trent, Sonubaits backed Adam Firth looked to the vast knowledge of this water from good friend, Ade Kiddell.
With the current flowing on the inside of the river, fishing close in, in the faster water was important. The swim was soon baited up with a mixture of Sonubaits Cheesy Garlic Halibut pellets, Code Red Pellets and Natural Hemp, introduced via a spod, whilst the incoming tide brought the river virtually to a standstill.
A large feeder packed with a mixtures of Sonubaits pellets and a large Code Red Hardened Dumbell as a hookbait were cast onto the spot.
At 1am the rod doubled over as an angry barbel powered off downstream. After 20minutes battling the fish, with the strong current of the river under his feet, Adam managed to move the fish upstream enough to use the river's strong flow to manoeuvre the tired barbel into the waiting landing net.
“It was clear that i'd just landed something special! This was much bigger than any other barbel I had caught before.” remarked Adam.
With the fish unhooked in the water and sufficiently rested, the fish was lifted the fish onto the scales. The needle swung around to 12lb 14oz.
“I was over the moon! Without the knowledge and teamwork involved on this session, it could have been a completely different outcome. It pays to speak to other anglers that have experience, especially on a venue as demanding and interesting as the Barbel Society's Sutton-On-Trent fishery.” remarked Adam.
Adam's successful tackle included Korum Running Rig Kits, 5oz Korum Combi Feeders, 6ft 12lb Xpert Power Mono hooklengths and a size 10 Xpert Power Hook. He also managed three other barbel, to 9lb 6oz.
